Sarah Haven Foster Watercolors
Collection Description:
Sarah Haven Foster. The library holds several folios containing nearly 1000 of her watercolors, either done locally or during her travels abroad. Most are miniatures, some as small as postage stamps. A good resource for local history is found in the 174 views of everyday life in Portsmouth and the surrounding area she painted during the late 1800's. These miniature works are mounted and bound in a single volume entitled Sketches of Portsmouth. Together with the description and histories of buildings in her Portsmouth Guide Book, published in 1876, they are invaluable to those interested in our architectural history and style. It includes 34 paintings of buildings in Portsmouth (at last count, 14 of the Portsmouth buildings depicted are still standing), and landscapes and buildings from York, New Castle, Newington, Kittery, Gerrish Island, and the Isles of Shoals.
