World War II local archive
Collection Description:
This collection originated at the end of World War II (1946) and was compiled by the Portsmouth War Records Committee. The committee, chaired by Dorothy Vaughan, City Librarian, was under the auspices of the New Hampshire War Records Committee. Various businesses, clubs, and organizations, were requested to submit a report to the Portsmouth War Records Committee of their activities during the war years. One result of the statewide effort culminated in a book by Philip N. Guyol entitled: Democracy fights: A History of New Hampshire in World War II. (Dartmouth Publications, 1951).
